Meet Sim

Sim Tze Tzin

Sim is the former State Assemblyman for Pantai Jerejak after the state assembly is dissolved. After working tirelessly for the people in his constituency, he is now standing as a Member of Parliament for Bayan Baru for Pakatan Rakyat, Party Keadilan Rakyat.

Born a Penangite in the heart of Georgetown on 6th February 1976, Sim Tze Tzin spent his formative years at Hu Yew Seah School, Georgetown and Chung Ling High School . After graduating with a Bachelor of Engineering with Honours from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) in 1999, he pursued his Masters degree at San José State University in the United States where he received a Masters of Science (Civil) in Highway Engineering. At the age of 32, Sim is currently married.Upon his arrival onto the political scene in Malaysia after five years of working in the United States , Sim became the political secretary of Parti Keadilan Rakyat de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and was instrumental in the release of the explosive VK Lingam video clip. Even though faced with official threats from the government to throw him in jail, Sim Tze Tzin adamantly refused to reveal the ‘whistleblowers’ in safeguarding the sources of the video.

Sim first discovered his fledgling leadership potential when he was selected to be prefect and president of various co-curricular societies during his high school days. He went on to become the first ever ethnic minority to win an election seat in the hotly contested UTM Students’ Representative Council by more than 9000 votes. As the voice of the students, he was passionately engaged in students’ politics to fight for students’ rights and welfare in UTM.

The young Sim demonstrated a strong sense of duty and loyalty to the country when he signed himself up for the Malaysian Reserve Army during university. Three years of Army Training under harsh and rigid conditions was duly rewarded when Sim was conferred the title of Leftenan Muda by DYMM Yang Di Pertuan Agung in April 1999.

Not averse to politics, Sim was shaken by the various injustices, abuse of power, police brutality and media bias during the Reformasi movement in 1998 when Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim was charged and sacked from the government. Together with friends, Sim joined the movement by founding the Malaysian Students and Youth Democratic Movement (DEMA) to promote democratic awareness among Malaysian citizens and to protest against the University and University College Act (AUKU). Many have now referred to his generation of student activists as the Reformasi Generation.

To fulfill his passion for technology, Sim worked as an engineer in Silicon Valley, California whilst taking his Masters studies. During those five years in the States, Sim actively engaged fellow Malaysians abroad in important brainstorms concerning the homeland. He founded the Malaysia Forum Organization in Stanford University, a non-profit civil society group that seeks to promote discussion of the state of public affairs and policies affecting Malaysia . An active society that comprises more than 300 members across the US, Sim established and fostered relationships with the Department of South East Asian Studies and policy experts including professors from Stanford, John Hopkins University, and Yale.

Sim’s political awakening must be contributed to his mother who told him about the 1989 Tiananmen massacre in China. The incident triggered his shock and awe when he saw how the then Chinese government regime oppressed its people cruelly. His hopes for peace and freedom in the world brought by the Oslo Peace Accord between Palestine and Israel were again shattered by the first Intifadah uprising. Since then, his zeal for politics has intensified as he hopes to be given a chance to bring about the betterment and peace in the society.
