I would like to respond to BN Leaders on the Boustead Reclamation Project:
1. I strongly condemn Barisan Nasional leaders for taking advantage of the Boustead Reclamation Project for political reasons. This is utterly irresponsible. The Resident Action Committee has clearly stated that they are above politics and reject any political party from intervening. Yet, BN leaders are still stirring the hornets’ nest. This will only irk the residents further and do nothing in solving their woes.
2. The Boustead Hotel Project was approved during the BN administration. Dato’ Teng Hock Nam should know clearly the details of this project. During that time, the BN administration was also applying for UNESCO Heritage Status. Dato’ Teng should be well aware of the 18m height restriction. However, he still went ahead to approve the 15 storey high building. He has a moral obligation to come clean on why he did so.
3. The Pakatan Rakyat Government practises true democracy. We are allowed to voice our opinion on Government policies. The State Government will also consider our views. This is true democracy at work. This is in total contrast to the practice within BN, which only kowtows to UMNO’s hegemony. Dato’ Teng should get himself attuned to the basics of a true democracy. Requesting me to resign over policy differences has only shown Dato’ Teng’s political immaturity.
4. As the State Assemblyman of Pantai Jerejak, I have expressed my reservation on this project as early as May, 2011, well before the incident was being politicized. I have always held the same position from day one. I have strong reservation on this particular reclamation project due to environmental and traffic congestion repercussion. However, I do understand the limitations of the State Government’s ability to compensate hundreds of millions of ringgit to Boustead Holdings.
5. Over the past several months, I have been actively assisting the residents on this matter. Shortly after I received a letter in early July requesting to hand over a memorandum to the Chief Minister, I immediately helped them in arranging a meeting with the CM’s political secretary. By the 8th of August, a meeting for the residents with the CM had been arranged. The second meeting took place on September 28th. These meetings are evident that I have been actively assisting the residents in looking for an amicable solution. I regret that certain residents with political leanings have come out and attacked me over this issue. To me this is nothing but an irresponsible act and I urge him to speak fairly. Otherwise, I will take further necessary action.
